Alfons den Broeder has been working since 2006 as a rheumatologist and clinical epidemiologist at the St. Maartenskliniek in Nijmegen, including from 2007 to 2015 as head of staff.
In addition to clinical work, he has been an active researcher since his 2001 PhD project on anti - TNF treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Currently he is clinical research lead inflammatory diseases at the sint Maartenskliniek, and associate professors in rheumatology in the Radboudumc. His research focus is on innovative treatment strategies in inflammatory rheumatic diseases, including on RA, biologicals, axSpA, PsA, PMR and gout, and specifically experienced in design and execution of randomised clinical trials. Other research subjects include implementation of quality of care (including management and consultancy). He is active in several national and international collaborations in the field of disease measurement, protocol development and quality, resulting in an extensive network of cooperation partners in the UK, USA, Belgium, Germany, France and Sweden. He has >210 peer reviewed publications, with a number in high profile journals including the BMJ, Lancet Rheumatology, Annals of the rheumatic diseases and Arthritis and Rheumatology. He has been/is PhD counsel for 25 PhDs, and has acquired research funding from ZonMW, ReumaNederland and other entities for > 6 million euro.
